Investing in Healthcare Lecture at Harvard HBS and Stanford GSB

Temi Marcella Awogboro

As an investor, I made a commitment that if I were to leave a legacy, it had to be in healthcare, because access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right. People deserve the right to live with hope and die with dignity.

Honoured to have been invited as a speaker for the “Africa Rising” course at Harvard Business School and at my Alma Mater Stanford Graduate School of Business. I shared my leadership experience as a healthcare investor, operator, and policy advisor on the continent highlighting both the challenges and opportunities.

Key Discussion Highlights.

1. Africa, with 54 countries and 1.4 billion people, constitutes 16% of the global population, bears 23% of the global disease burdens, and allocates only 5% of GDP to healthcare.

2. According to The Global Impact Investing Network, of the estimated $500 billion annual global social-impact investment, Africa receives only 1.6% highlighting a massive global health financing disparity.

3. Africa’s middle-class economy is expected to grow to 1 billion and 60% of this population is expected to be residing in urban areas by 2050, increasing the addressable market for healthcare services on the continent.

4. Africa has only 1.3% of the world’s trained health personnel, which provides an opportunity for integrated, technology-enabled solutions that address critical talent formation, up-skilling and retention.

5. Technology has the potential to revolutionize service delivery, improve access and health outcomes. According to McKinsey & Company, by expanding the use of digital health tools, African health systems could realize up to 15 percent efficiency gains by 2030.
